Partner FEV has developed a deep understanding of what thermal insulation’s contribution can be towards proving the engine efficiency potential by thermal insulation to contribute to reach 50% brake thermal efficiency.
Thermal swing effect:
Thickness of the insulation plays a critical role in balancing heat losses along the front and back side of the coating
Thermal insulation – Single cylinder results:
- Introducing thermal insulation, a reduction in wall heat transfer can be observed
- Exhaust losses are increased since not all savings in wall heat losses can be transferred into combustion efficiency
- Insulation of the exhaust ports leads to a further increase of the exhaust losses due to a lower heat rejection over the port into the engine coolant
